Item classes let you group items for reporting purposes.
For example: All popcorn items may be grouped under an Item Class called POPC.
In Vista there is a set of default General Ledger Accounts used to track the values of different transactions of items, such as Concession Revenue, Cost of Goods Sold and Inventory Adjustments. Item classes can be configured with custom GL Accounts to override the default System Accounts.
If you want Items to belong to a hierarchy of classes, rather than independent classes, you can set that up Item hierarchy manager.
