Facebook Custom Audiences explained
A Facebook Custom Audience is an ad targeting service made up of your existing contacts, allowing you to import email addresses for targeted advertising. Custom Audiences are an increasingly-essential part of an effective omni-channel strategy, allowing you to interact with your moviegoers beyond the channels you directly control and across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and the Facebook Audience Network (3rd party apps). This creates an opportunity to reach known moviegoers who are not opted in to receive the exhibitors’ communications directly.
Custom Audiences are essentially a matching system, pairing a hashed email with that moviegoer’s Facebook profile. It’s important to note that Facebook does not:
- Learn any new identifying information about these contacts
- Inform you of which members were matched
- Reveal who was exposed to the advertisement
- Report on how many members within the Custom Audience performed the desired action
How it works
The way it works is simple. Movio has created a seamless integration with Facebook that connects Movio Cinema directly with your organisation’s Facebook Ad Account. This means you can use Movio Cinema for segmenting and targeting your audience, and measure the impact of your ad campaign.

How to enable Facebook Campaigns
In order to link Movio Cinema to the Exhibitor’s Facebook Business Manager Account, the Exhibitor will need to provide Movio with the Facebook Ad Account ID that the Exhibitor wants to send the Movio Cinema audience to. The Exhibitor can provide Movio with the Facebook Ad Account ID by notifying its Account Manager by email or by submitting a request.
Movio will send a request to that Facebook Ad Account for standard access rights, which the Exhibitor will need to accept within its Facebook Ad Account. Standard access rights include creating and editing ads, accessing reports and viewing ads. However, Movio will only use this access for the purpose of providing the Movio Cinema Services (including delivering the relevant Custom Audience) and for no other purpose. The Exhibitor may revoke Movio’s access at any time but, should the Exhibitor do so, the Exhibitor will no longer be able to use Movio Cinema’s Facebook Connect to distribute Custom Audiences to Facebook. The Exhibitor will also need to accept Facebook’s Custom Audience Terms from within its Facebook Ad Account – see https://www.facebook.com/legal/terms/customaudience.
Movio has no liability for any Custom Audience distributions to Facebook Ad Accounts due to:
- the Exhibitor incorrectly providing a Facebook Account ID; or
- the Exhibitor’s fraudulent or otherwise unauthorised use or provision of any Facebook Ad Account ID.
