Use the Campaign received filter with scheduled prerequisite campaigns to create a reliable campaign sequence that runs automatically and prevents members from receiving multiple similar campaigns.
This approach helps you:
- Schedule coordinated campaign sequences in advance.
- Ensure campaigns run in the intended order.
- Exclude recipients of earlier campaigns from later campaigns.
- Reduce audience fatigue from duplicate messaging.
- Prevent overlap between related campaigns.
- Eliminate the need to manually update audiences between sends.
Why use prerequisite campaigns?
A prerequisite campaign ensures that one campaign can’t send until another campaign has successfully sent first.
For example, if Campaign B has Campaign A as a prerequisite:
- Campaign A sends first.
- Campaign B waits until Campaign A has completed sending.
- If Campaign A doesn’t send, Campaign B doesn’t send.
This is especially useful when you can’t predict exactly when a campaign will finish sending because send time can vary depending on audience size.
How the Campaign received filter works with prerequisite campaigns
You can use the Campaign received filter to exclude members who received another campaign.
The filter can include:
- Sent campaigns.
- Scheduled campaigns that have been added as prerequisites.
This allows you to build and schedule a campaign sequence before any campaign has been sent.
Note: A scheduled campaign only becomes available in the Campaign received filter after it has been added as a prerequisite for the current campaign.
Example: create a campaign sequence without audience overlap
The following example shows how to create three campaigns that run in sequence while ensuring members receive only one of them.
Step 1: Create Campaign A
- Create Campaign A.
- Schedule the campaign, for example Monday at 9:00 AM.
Step 2: Create Campaign B
- Create Campaign B.
- Add Campaign A as a prerequisite.
- Schedule Campaign B after Campaign A.
- In the audience settings, add:
- Exclude → Campaign received → Campaign A.
Step 3: Create Campaign C
- Create Campaign C.
- Add Campaign B as a prerequisite.
- Schedule Campaign C after Campaign B.
- In the audience settings, add:
- Exclude → Campaign received → Campaign A
- Exclude → Campaign received → Campaign B.
Result
The campaigns run automatically in sequence:
- Campaign A sends first.
- Campaign B sends next, but only to members who didn’t receive Campaign A.
- Campaign C sends last, but only to members who didn’t receive Campaign A or Campaign B.
This prevents audience overlap and removes the need for manual intervention after each campaign is sent.
Example use case
A cinema wants to promote several upcoming films over the same weekend. Some members may qualify for multiple campaigns based on audience rules or the Propensity Algorithm.
Instead of risking multiple promotional emails being sent to the same members, the marketer can:
- Create all campaigns in advance.
- Link them together using prerequisites.
- Exclude recipients of earlier campaigns using the Campaign received filter.
The system then automatically sends the campaigns in order while ensuring that members who received an earlier campaign are excluded from later campaigns.
